Blogging Interns

Building Skills, Confidence, and Networking
(Reprinted from Ted Demopoulos' book
What No One Ever Tells You About Blogging and Podcasting)

"It's a great experience," says Christopher Salazar, an intern with a Global 1000 Technology Company, working with both marketing and the Web, and a 3rd year marketing major at Santa Clara University, referring to both his internship and his blogging. Christopher started blogging shortly after starting at Hitachi, encouraged by his manager and mentor, and has seen multiple benefits.

Christopher posts three times a week minimum at his blog e-Bizz by Christopher Salazar, http://ebizz.wordpress.com/ (now moved to http://ebiz-tomorrow.com/blog/ ). He spends about 3-4 hours a day, including time spent reading blogs and leaving comments. Christopher uses blogging to keep up with current events in business and technology. He even wakes up early to see what's new.
"My school says network, network, network, but doesn't say how," says Christopher. One of the advantages to blogging is social – the networking. Through blogging, he's met lots of people in the business world, both online and in person at local blogger's dinners. Blogging is an ongoing networking tool.

Christopher's confidence has increased significantly. "The fact that I'm thinking 'business' more often is a big help," he says. "Blogging makes you look at things in a more analytical light." He's learned the importance of critically analyzing things, which is what he does at work all the time. He says in school they primarily do non-real world "word problems," while blogging and business is "real life analysis." "It's also amazing how my writing skills have improved since I started blogging," Christopher adds.

Christopher has a lot of intern friends and many are having a difficult time with the transition from business to school. He feels that blogging has been an enormous help with his transition. Unfortunately, not many interns seem interested in blogging according to Christopher. None of the interns he knows locally have any interest, and he has been trying to reach out to interns over the Internet. He has found a few other blogging interns and they share experiences.

Christopher is looking forward to his transition in a few months to the fulltime business world. He's built confidence, skills, and a network through blogging. He actually wants potential employers to Google him and see what he's been doing! Along with his MySpace and Facebook information, almost a given for students, they'll see all his critical thoughts, analysis, and opinions from his blog.
